It has come to our attention that the Huntsville City Council is taking action to restrict the public's opportunities to speak at City Council meetings. We believe that democratic government depends upon informed and active participation at all levels of government. Therefore, we sent the attached letter to the City Council urging them to reconsider these restrictions due to the hardships caused by such restrictions.

We are calling on you to take action to protect your First Amendment right to petition your local government. Please call or email your Huntsville City Council Member and tell them that you are a constituent and that you want them to vote NO on the rules amendment. Do this NOW because the council meeting is on 8 July 2021 (today) at 5:30 pm.

Head to the polls with confidence this Election Day! When you get to your polling place, don’t leave without voting!
Make your voting plan in advance, including how you will get to the polls. Come prepared to stand in line! Check the weather, dress accordingly, bring snacks and a chair.

If you’re listed as inactive, request a revalidation form - you can still vote! If you make a mistake, a poll worker can spoil your ballot and give you a new one. If you’re in line when the polls close, don’t leave! Stay in line - you can still vote.

If you experience any issues when you go to vote, or see behavior that is suppressing or intimidating voters, call 866-OUR-VOTE, it’s the national Election Protection Hotline and they will mobilize local resources to help you exercise your right to vote.

Please wear a mask, bring your own black pen, and you will need to bring a valid photo ID.
Poll workers will scan your ID, and have you sign a statement that you are yourself and you live at your current address, and hand you your ballot.
Fill your ballot out by filling in the circles for the candidate of your choice for each race (and amendment). You then feed your ballot into the tabulator, receive your “I Voted!” sticker, and you’ve made democracy work!

Any registered Alabama voter who is concerned about voting at their polling place due to COVID-19 can apply to vote absentee, all you have to do is fill out an application to vote absentee (https://www.sos.alabama.gov/alabama-votes/voter/absentee-voting) and send it your absentee election manager. For most absentee excuses, you will need to provide a copy of your photo ID.
You can also go to the absentee election manager’s office and fill out an absentee ballot on the spot, up until October 29th.

If you are considering volunteering to be a poll worker on Election Day, visit PowerThePolls.Org. You’ll receive training, and some locations will even pay you for your work on Election Day.

You can register to vote online right now! Go to AlabamaVotes.Gov and scroll down to “voter registration” then “online registration” – check the requirements, and start the application process!

On September 2, 2020, Kathleen Leonard, President of the LWVTNV, accompanied by Rita Bray, member, attended the Madison County Commission Meeting. Each made a made public statement regarding the confederate monument. The LWVTNV will continue to make statements regarding the monument as part of our Diversity Equity and Inclusion program that includes the truth telling and reconciliation necessary to make democracy work for the entire Tennessee Valley.

On July 22, 2020, the President of the LWVTNV made a statement to Madison County Commission calling for the removal of the confederate Monument

The Huntsville Black Photographer's graciously invited the LWVTNV give them a presentation on voting. We discussed current voter registration requirements, absentee voting, the Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA), Voter Rights Restoration (VRR), and #VoteSafeAL. If you want to learn more, read the attached presentation. We are happy to give the presentation to your group and address any specific topics you request. As we approach the election, we will update our website with additional information to help you learn about the issues.

We're excited to share Part 1 and Part 2 of the League of Women Voters of the Tennessee Valley's 19th Amendment Centennial project. Part 1 covers the period 1848-1920 and Part 2 covers 1920 until the present. They were developed by the LWVTNV Historical Education Committee and reflect our theme of "The Struggle to Vote in Alabama"League of Women Voters of the Tennessee Valley (LWVTNV) Centennial Committee co-chair, Sari Oosta, did a wonderful job narrating the presentations. We are celebrating the Centennial of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to Vote while acknowledging the ongoing struggle to vote in Alabama. Due to the pandemic we have to find alternative ways to communicate and celebrate the 19th Amendment and acknowledge the ongoing struggle to vote in Alabama.

On Monday June 1, and Wednesday, June 3, 2020, the latest chapter in Alabama's sad history of civil rights violations was written. The Huntsville police, Madison County Sheriff, and the Alabama State Troopers combined to attack demonstrators who were
protesting police brutality. The attacks were out of proportion to the action of the protestors.

We are horrified at this threat to civil liberties, and deeply dismayed to find it here in a town we had believed to be a beacon of progress for the rest of Alabama. We urge our city and county leaders to ensure that the first amendment rights of all are protected. Our local government and police must put in place policies and procedures to ensure respectful and appropriate treatment of all people they are sworn to serve and protect. We stand ready to engage in civil dialogue with any and all interested stakeholders to address this issue and to Make Democracy Work for Huntsville, Madison County, and Alabama.
