Violence at the Capitol

Sara Feldmeier | Published on 1/8/2021

The motto of the League of Women Voters is “Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy.”

You have seen us out in our communities, registering voters, removing barriers to the vote, working to restore voting rights, working to increase access to the ballot, getting out information – all ways we strive to empower voters.

In doing so, we are of course working to uphold democracy in our nation, but we have seldom had occasion to defend democracy in the sense that it is under attack.

This week, our nation saw a heinous attack on the architecture of democracy: the violent insurrection at the US Capitol building during Congress’ certification of the Electoral College vote for the next President of the United States.

We abhor this attack on the democratic process and the violence against our elected representatives, those who have sworn to protect them, their staff, and the members of the press. We abhor the attempted disenfranchisement of millions of Americans.

We at the League of Women Voters of the Tennessee Valley will continue to work, every hour of every day, to uphold the US Constitution, our democracy, and the rights and voices of you, the voters.
